Kaius was born into the noble Umber House at Last Hearth to father, Gareth Umber, and mother, Caitlin Umber. As the oldest son, he was expected to assume his father’s role when the time came, but he wanted none of that. He was not concerned with lands or titles or the politics that came with them; he cared more for fighting the good fight and protecting those lands. Instead of focusing on lessons of history, houses, and the king’s law, Kauis spent hours in the Last Hearth’s courtyard practicing with sword and bow until only the most foolish thought to test his mettle. This constant ( find word) created a fierce and skilled warrior who could fight with almost any weapon, especially the bow and sword. His father’s men quickly came to see him as a natural leader and easily followed any word he gave. Unfortunately because of his favor over these men to his family duty, he soon became the black sheep of the house and left to seek a place for himself. He joined one army and another, never accepting an offered command to lead which sent him off to search again.

At the passing of his father, Kaius reluctantly returned home to take over his home as its rightful heir. Fortunately for him, he has found great honor in serving as a bannerman for the Stark home. He has repeatedly shown his loyalty to the Warden of the North by beating back wildlings and coming to his Lord’s call in any time of need. It was during one of those times that he earned his nickname, The Shadowcat”; during one particularly harsh battle, Kaius snuck a small group of soldiers past enemy lines to attack them from the rear. It was rumored that his movement and skills were so silent and so deadly that the enemy never knew what hit them until it was too late.

Like most Umbers, Kaius is very tall, hinting at the ancient blood that flows through him. He is strong, boisterous and stubborn. He fears nothing and will stop at nothing to defend his home, family and lands. He will not fight for honor, but for the basic needs of those he loves. Kaius is not one to double cross or to try to draw into petty word fights as you’d sooner find yourself at sword point instead. If one does not find him in Last Hearth or Winterfell, he can easily be seen downing the ale and mead in Winter Town’s inn.
